Public Safety

Mayor Angel Taveras believes that all Rhode Islanders have the right to feel safe and secure in their homes and in their workplaces.

By hiring additional police officers and reinvesting in community policing, fighting to keep illegal guns off the street, and working to ensure that young people have access to positive summertime and afterschool activities, Mayor Taveras has made public safety a top priority.  As Governor, Angel will fight to ensure that every young person has the opportunity to grow up in a community free from crime and violence.

As Governor, Angel will:

  • Fight to keep illegal guns off our streets, including working to support a ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
  • Strengthen Rhode Island’s domestic violence statutes by prohibiting convicted abusers from obtaining or possessing dangerous weapons.
  • Work to keep firearms out of the hands of the mentally unstable by supporting Rhode Island’s full integration in the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System.
  • Invest in evidence-based crime prevention and recidivism programs that work to rehabilitate violent offenders reintegrating into the workforce.
