Angel Taveras knows that strong public schools are the bedrock of every community. That’s why, as Governor, Angel Taveras will work to ensure that every young person has access to an excellent public school education.
Mayor Angel Taveras went from Head Start to Harvard, and he did it through the Providence Public School System. That’s why, as Mayor, Angel has made improving educational outcomes for Providence’s young people his number one priority. Mayor Taveras’s efforts have received national recognition, winning acclaim from organizations like the Annie E. Casey Foundation and Bloomberg Philanthropies and earning Providence designation from the National Civic League as a “2012 All-America City for Grade Level Reading.” As Governor, Angel will ensure that all of Rhode Island’s young people have access to a high quality public school education.
As Governor, Angel will:
- Make public education a top priority in our state and ensure we support our students from cradle to career.
- Ensure that every child in Rhode Island has access to a high-quality, voluntary pre-kindergarten program.
- Raise the percentage of students who are reading at grade-level by the end of third grade, by making sure that children and teachers receive support throughout the academic school year, after school and through summer learning programs.
- Support thoughtful implementation of the Common Core State Standards and the adoption of the Partnership for the Assessment of Readiness in College & Career in a way that respects the voices of Rhode Island’s educators, families and students.
